Grass For Your Yard:
|
|
OK, you’re tired of Floratam, St. Augustine dying on you. In Florida, we face many challenges to have a nice looking landscape, and none of the options that we offer are perfect. In Florida it is tough to have a picture perfect lawn. We have tremendous pest issues- weeds, disease, insects, animals, heat, lack of water- I can go on and on. Today’s yards are smaller (hopefully easier to manage) so why not invest in a better sod for your outside oasis? We offer you four alternatives from the traditional grasses used in a Florida landscape; EMPIRE, Celebration, Sapphire, and Perennial Peanut

Empire Turf- our favorite choice
This grass is known for four things in our opinion- drought tolerance, chinch bug resistance, being a slow grower, and having a finer bladed texture. If you are looking for a grass that can truly withstand less water than traditional grasses, look no further. Unlike Floratam which stays green, green, green, then dies during a drought- Empire goes dormant and loses color, but once the rain or the sprinklers hit it, the color comes back. This grass is not impervious to insects, but unlike most St. Augustine you are not treating once a month for chinch bugs, and we all agree the less chemicals, the better. Being a slow grower is a plus if you don‘t like to sit on a mower on your time off. You don’t have to mow it as often as typical Florida grasses. People tell us all the time, “I don’t want that crabgrass-looking turf in my yard referring to St. Augustine. Empire offers a soft to the touch finer feel , more like the cool season grasses found to the north. Empire is a finer bladed grass, yet not to fine for the traditional lawn mower. This is a grass that your kids, your grandkids, maybe even you can really roll around on! Another advantage to Empire as seen in our home page picture is its adaptability to moderate shade. Keep in mind again, none of them are perfect- but join the green home builders across the state and make your yard a green outside oasis.! |

Perennial Peanut also called Ecoturf
Our perennial peanut selection is a result of clients asking for a low maintenance alternative to turf as we know it. Once established Perennial Peanut offers true drought tolerance, no pest control necessary, no supplemental N or P fertilizer, best of all little to no mowing , all the while being aesthetically attractive. This is starting to see use in highway medians, homes, as erosion control, in water restricted areas amongst the many places. The only place we would not recommend it is in the shade. Here are few links for more information on using Perennial Peanut: • Establishment and Management of Ornamental Perennial Peanut • Guide to Using Rhizomal Perennial Peanut in the Urban Landscape • Weed Control in Perennial Peanut |

Celebration Bermuda
The first Bermuda that we would recommend for a home. This grass will truly touch off a beautifully-landscaped home. There is a misconception that Bermuda requires more care. In drought studies in San Antonio, Texas. Celebration was the number one rated grass of all the grasses rated after no irrigation and no rainfall for 60 days, and after an additional 30 days( with irrigation being provided- it still had the best color of all. With the proper mower and a little education- this grass can be less care than most grasses. Once again drought tolerance is a key reason to consider this grass. Finer bladed than EMPIRE but rich in color, for the family that likes to really play a round in their backyard, the consummate golfer, or those of you that like the looks of a more proper English garden this is a great choice.

Sapphire St. Augustine
If you are forced to stay with St. Augustine or you really like it, we have options there as well. Sapphire has great color, it grows a little denser than other St. Augustine's, and it will recover from physical damage quicker than the average lawn. It is an attractive turf grass with fast horizontal growth; with a long leaf blade that has a fine leaf appearance. It has a pleasing blue-green color with excellent color retention. Sapphire is hard-wearing in our demanding climate. It will tolerate salt, shade, and drought, performing well with less maintenance, fertilization, and water. Sapphire is definitely a superior homeowner’s grass to the typical St. Augustine, due to improved wear recovery and reduced weed problems. |
